Artist’s statement: “In my work, I use recurring motifs such as oysters, palm trees, and pools to display connection and gratitude for the land I call home, in this body of work, this is aiming to tell the story of ‘place’. The works here also feature a number of quirky figures inspired by the people around me but they also represent versions of myself. These figures help tell the story of ‘people’. Most of my work takes scenes from every day and reinvents them to give my personal impression. At first glance, I think this body of work appears vibrant and full of life but I’ve purposely created paintings displaying empty white-walled window scenes and dark shadow spaces in contrast with more colourful and chaotic pictures setting out to tell a personal story. This is the story of trying to balance loneliness and darkness with joyful experiences. A story from the ‘mind’ I call home’.”
